Short answer

Butcher paper can be a reasonable lower-impact choice when it is plain, uncoated paper, because paper is made from a renewable fibre and is generally biodegradable. But “butcher paper” covers several products, and coated types and freezer paper behave differently. Food contamination also affects what you can do with it afterwards, so it is not automatically eco friendly.

What butcher paper is

Butcher paper is a sturdy paper used to wrap raw meat and fish, line serving trays, wrap sandwiches, and cover tables. Colours and finishes vary. Some rolls are plain white, others are pink or peach, and some are treated with a sizing to help resist leaks. Wide rolls are also popular for crafts and table covers, which is one reason it appears on a paper-crafts site.

Uncoated versus coated

  • Uncoated or lightly sized paper is closer to ordinary paper. It is breathable and, in general, simpler to deal with at end of life.
  • Treated paper may include sizing or other finishes for leak resistance. The details differ between brands, so check the product information.
  • Freezer paper is the one to watch. It typically has a plastic coating on one side, which changes how it can be disposed of.

Butcher paper versus freezer paper

They look alike but are different. Freezer paper normally has a coating to protect against moisture and freezer burn, while butcher paper generally does not. Because of the coating, freezer paper is less likely to be accepted for recycling or composting. For a related comparison with wax-coated papers, see our article on whether wax paper is sustainable.

Is paper biodegradable?

Plain paper made of plant fibre is generally biodegradable, though how quickly it breaks down depends on the conditions. Coatings, inks and food residue slow or complicate that. A biodegradable label alone does not tell you whether it is suitable for your home compost bin.

Recycling and composting after food use

  • Clean, uncoated paper may be accepted in paper recycling in some areas.
  • Paper soaked with meat juices, fat or grease is usually not suitable for recycling, and handling raw meat packaging calls for hygiene care.
  • Composting is possible in some schemes for lightly soiled uncoated paper, but raw meat residue may not be accepted in home compost. Check your local food waste rules.
  • Waxed or coated paper is generally not recyclable. This also applies to waxed paper, which people often ask about.

When unsure, use general waste for anything with raw meat residue and follow your local authority’s guidance.

Oven, microwave and heat use

Heat questions are about safety, not just the environment. Some suppliers say butcher paper can be used in the oven or for wrapping meat during smoking, but that depends on the specific paper, temperature and setup, and paper can scorch or ignite. We do not recommend assuming any paper is oven or microwave safe. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep paper away from heating elements and open flames, and if the pack gives no heat guidance, do not use it for cooking or microwaving. For lined baking, see parchment paper, which is designed for it.

Reuse and craft uses

Clean, unused offcuts are useful for wrapping parcels, covering craft tables, drawing, templates and stamping. Wide sheets also suit large-scale sketching and, as a budget option, pattern drafting (compare pattern making papers). Using leftover clean paper this way is a simple way to cut waste. Keep craft uses separate from anything that has touched raw food.

How it compares

Compared with plastic wrap or foil, plain butcher paper is simpler to dispose of when clean, but it is not reusable for food in the same way as containers. Compared with greaseproof paper, it is usually less engineered for grease resistance, which can mean fewer coatings but also less barrier performance.

FAQ

Is butcher paper the same as freezer paper?

No. Freezer paper normally has a coating on one side, while butcher paper typically does not.

Is paper biodegradable?

Plain paper generally is, depending on conditions, but coatings and food residue can change that.

Can waxed paper go in recycling?

Usually not. Check your local scheme. See our wax paper article.

Can you microwave butcher paper?

We advise against assuming so. Only do it if the manufacturer explicitly says that product is microwave safe, and stay near the oven. When in doubt, use a microwave-safe dish instead.
