Short answer
There is no single official standard, but flyers are commonly printed on mid-weight paper, somewhere around 100-150 gsm (very roughly 70-100 lb text). Lighter paper of about 80-90 gsm is common for budget handouts, and heavier paper or light card of about 200 gsm and up is used when a flyer needs to feel sturdy. Print shops may quote slightly different figures, so check the exact stock they list.
What does paper pound mean?
In North America, paper weight is often given in pounds. That figure is the weight of a ream of a standard uncut sheet size, and the base size depends on the paper category. Because of that, 100 lb text paper is not the same weight as 100 lb cover. Our paper weight and GSM guide explains why and gives approximate conversions. When you compare options, it is usually easier to convert to gsm.
Common flyer weights
These numbers are approximate. Always compare using the same unit.
| Weight | Approximate gsm | Typical feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 lb bond | about 75 | Office paper | Quick handouts, drafts |
| 24-28 lb bond | about 90-105 | Slightly heavier | Home-printed flyers, notices |
| 70 lb text | about 105 | Light print-shop paper | Budget flyers |
| 80 lb text | about 120 | Mid-weight | Mass handouts |
| 100 lb text | about 150 | Substantial, flexible | Professional flyers, menus |
| 80 lb cover | about 215 | Light card | Rigid flyers, rack cards |
Matching weight to how the flyer is used
- Mass handouts and door drops: A lighter weight keeps costs and bulk down.
- Counter displays and events: A mid-weight paper looks more polished and feels less flimsy.
- Mailed pieces: Weight can affect postage, so check with your postal service before ordering.
- Outdoor or heavy handling: Heavier, coated or laminated stock resists wear better, but still avoid wet conditions.
- Double-sided flyers: Heavier paper shows less print-through from the reverse side.
If you are creating a craft fair flyer or a class poster, a 100-150 gsm sheet is often a comfortable middle ground. Many people who sell handmade cards also print small price cards on heavier stock. If your flyer will be folded into a leaflet, see the brochure folding options for which folds suit which weights.
Printing flyers at home
Home printers are designed for ordinary office weights. Many accept somewhat heavier paper, but limits vary, so check your printer manual for the supported weight range and any special feed path. If you are not sure, test one sheet first. See our note on copier paper vs multipurpose paper for choosing a decent everyday ream, and bond paper vs normal paper if you would like a slightly more refined sheet.
Glossy and coated papers made for inkjets can look good for photos, but confirm that the paper matches your printer type. Laser printers use heat, so use paper labelled as laser-compatible.
Is 32 lb paper too thick?
Generally no. 32 lb bond is around 120 gsm and is still a flexible paper, not cardstock. Many home printers can handle it, though you should confirm in your manual. It can be a nice choice for a flyer you want to feel more substantial. Because it is thicker, expect slightly more resistance in the feed path.
How much does one sheet weigh?
A US letter sheet (8.5 x 11 inches) of 20 lb bond weighs roughly 4.5 grams. That is an approximation, but it shows why large print runs can add up in weight. Heavier paper weighs proportionally more, which matters for mailing.
Gloss, matte or uncoated?
Uncoated paper is easy to write on, which suits flyers with notes or signatures. Matte coatings reduce glare and are good for text-heavy designs. Gloss gives vivid colour, but it can show fingerprints and is harder to write on. Choose based on whether people will write on the flyer.
Safety note: when trimming stacks of flyers by hand, use a sharp blade or a guillotine with its guard in place, and keep hands clear of the blade.
Quick recap
- No single standard exists, but about 100-150 gsm is a common mid-range.
- Lighter paper suits mass handouts; heavier stock feels more polished.
- Pounds are not directly comparable between text and cover paper.
- 32 lb paper is not too thick for most uses.
- Check your printer manual before using heavier stock.
